VPS cost calculator: hourly vs monthly
Most people overpay for servers they only need part of the time. Pick a plan, set how many hours a day and days a month it actually runs, and see the difference between hourly billing and paying for the full month.
How hourly billing works
The monthly price is divided by 730 hours (the average month). While a server exists you pay that hourly rate from a prepaid balance; when you destroy it, billing stops. A stopped server still costs money because the hardware stays reserved — destroy it if you don't need it.
Scenarios where hourly wins
- CI runners and build boxes that run a few hours a day.
- Testing a stack before you commit: spin up, break things, destroy.
- Event-based workloads — a game server for weekend sessions, a scraper for a one-off job.
- Trying several locations to compare real latency before choosing one.
If a server runs 24/7, hourly and monthly come out the same — you just keep the freedom to stop paying any hour. More on pricing in how much a VPS costs.
