How to use the keys
- Download the private key and save it as
~/.ssh/id_ed25519(Windows:C:\Users\you\.ssh\id_ed25519). On macOS/Linux runchmod 600 ~/.ssh/id_ed25519. - Paste the public key into your VPS provider's dashboard when creating a server, or append it to
~/.ssh/authorized_keyson an existing one. - Connect:

Ed25519 or RSA?
Ed25519 keys are short, fast and secure, and every modern SSH server supports them. Choose RSA-4096 only for very old systems. The private key is unencrypted; if you want a passphrase, add one locally with ssh-keygen -p -f ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.

Is it safe to generate SSH keys online?
With this tool the keys are created by your own browser and never transmitted. For maximum assurance you can disconnect from the internet before generating, or use ssh-keygen locally.
Which format is the private key in?
Ed25519 keys use the standard OpenSSH format (BEGIN OPENSSH PRIVATE KEY); RSA keys use PKCS#8 PEM. Both work with OpenSSH, and PuTTYgen can import them.
How do I add a passphrase?
Run ssh-keygen -p -f path/to/key on your computer and enter a new passphrase.
