Why your IP matters on a server
Your public IP is what servers see when you connect. On a VPS you'll use it to allow only yourself into SSH or an admin panel, for example ufw allow from YOUR_IP to any port 22. Home IPs often change, so allow a range or keep a backup way in (the provider's web console).
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4 addresses (like 203.0.113.10) are running out, which is why some clouds now charge for them. IPv6 (like 2001:db8::1) is plentiful: a VPS usually gets a whole /64 block. If the check above says your connection has no IPv6, you can still reach IPv6-only services through a VPS that has both.
FAQ
Is my IP address the same as my location?
It reveals your internet provider and an approximate city, not your exact address.
Why do I see a different IP than my friend on the same Wi-Fi?
You shouldn't — devices behind one router share the public IPv4. With IPv6 each device can have its own address.
How can I change my IP?
Reconnecting may give you a new one from your ISP. A VPN on your own VPS gives you the server's IP in the country you choose.
