How much does a VPS cost in 2026?
A usable VPS costs $5–12 a month for a small machine and $60–150 for a serious one. The sticker price, though, is only part of the bill. Here's what you really pay for — and where the money leaks.
Typical 2026 prices
| Size | Typical spec | Market range / month | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM | $4–10 | VPN, bot, small site |
| Small | 1–2 vCPU, 2–4 GB | $10–35 | Web apps, WordPress, Docker |
| Medium | 4 vCPU, 8 GB | $40–75 | Databases, game servers |
| Large | 6–8 vCPU, 16–32 GB | $80–250 | Busy apps, many containers |
Big-brand clouds (AWS, Azure, Google) are usually at the top of these ranges or above once you add traffic and storage. Developer clouds sit in the middle. Rock-bottom offers often oversell CPU, so performance swings.
The costs nobody advertises
- Outbound traffic. Plans include a monthly allowance (typically 1–5 TB). Overage is billed per GB — cheap on developer clouds, painful on the hyperscalers. Convert TB to Mbps with the bandwidth calculator.
- IPv4 addresses. Some clouds now charge a few dollars a month per public IPv4.
- Backups and snapshots. Automatic backups usually cost 20–30% of the plan price.
- Licences. Windows Server is charged per vCPU and can cost more than the server itself.
- Taxes. EU prices are often shown without VAT; 19–21% is added at checkout.
- Payment fees. Card or crypto network fees. On crypto, the network you pick matters: USDT on BEP20 or TON costs cents, on TRC20 several dollars.
- Stopped servers. Almost every provider bills a powered-off server, because its resources stay reserved.
How to pay less
- Bill by the hour for anything that doesn't run 24/7 — see the cost calculator.
- Destroy, don't stop. Back up what you need, then delete the server.
- Right-size. Watch real usage for a week; most small apps never use more than 1 GB of RAM.
- Pick a cheap payment route if you pay with crypto — stablecoins on low-fee networks.
- Avoid lock-in. Annual prepayment discounts hurt when your needs change in month two.
Example: a 2 vCPU / 4 GB server at $34/month + 19% VAT costs about $0.055 per hour. A CI runner that works 4 hours on weekdays costs roughly $4.90 a month instead of $40.46.
