Checklist
How to choose a VPS provider: a 12-point checklist
Most VPS offers look the same on the pricing page. The differences show up later — in the bill, in a support ticket at 3 a.m., or when the provider asks for your passport. Go through these twelve points before you commit.
Performance and location
- Is the CPU shared or dedicated? Cheap plans share cores; fine for most apps, bad for constant heavy load. Look for "dedicated CPU" or high-frequency options if you need steady performance.
- NVMe or SSD? In 2026, NVMe storage should be standard.
- Are there locations near your users? Measure it — run the ping test.
- IPv4 and IPv6 included? Some providers now charge extra for IPv4.
Money
- Hourly or monthly? Hourly billing lets you test and destroy without paying for a month. See the calculator.
- What does traffic cost? Check the included allowance and the per-GB price above it.
- What's extra? Backups, snapshots, licences, DDoS protection, VAT — read the hidden-cost list.
- How can you pay? Card, PayPal, crypto? If you pay in crypto, which coins and networks, and who pays the network fee?
Trust and privacy
- What do they require to sign up? Email only, or ID documents and a phone number? Collecting less data means less to leak.
- Is there a clear abuse policy? A provider that tolerates spam and attacks gets its IP ranges blacklisted — your server suffers too. Look for a published acceptable-use policy and an abuse contact.
- Who answers support? A human, how fast, and through which channel?
- Can you leave easily? Hourly billing, no annual contracts, an API and standard images make moving painless.
Quick test: create the smallest server, run your app for an hour, measure latency and speed, then destroy it. On an hourly plan that costs cents and tells you more than any review.
Red flags
- "Unlimited" everything at a price that can't cover the hardware.
- No pricing for traffic, backups or licences anywhere on the site.
- Prepayment for a year required to see the advertised price.
- No terms of service, no privacy policy, no abuse contact.
